Guided By Voices Human Amusement At Hourly Rates (Matador) Rating: NNN
There's so much Guided by Voices material available now that they definitely needed an insightfully compiled career overview to serve as a way into their ever-expanding catalogue of non-hits. Judging by the Human Amusement disc's puzzling assortment of alternate takes on audience faves and the usual song fragments that serve as album filler, maybe someone other than group mastermind Robert Pollard should've been the designated selector. True, there's a good balance between early faves (Shocker In Gloomtown, 14 Cheerleader Coldfront, A Salty Salute) and more recent crowd-pleasers (Glad Girls, Teenage FBI), but there are not enough of those instantly memorable but overlooked marvels that Pollard casually tosses off like My Impression Now and Trap Soul Door - both oddly left off. Those holding out for the Hardcore UFOs box should note that the Human Amusement disc is included. Guided by Voices revisit their greatest misses at the Opera House Friday (November 14).
