Being a kick-ass guitarist who knows when to lay out has made Gurf Morlix a sideman of choice to the stars, but in recent years he's also demonstrated his production skills (see Mary Gauthier), and on Cut 'N Shoot he proves he's got the songwriting chops to match. Nothing fancy here, just a well-paced set of honky-tonk two-steppers and heartbroke ballads delivered with characteristic understatement and a plain-spoken wisdom that makes each number sound like a juke joint classic. Were You Lyin' Down (When You Stood Me Up)? is the best Bakersfield-style hardwood stomper Buck Owens never wrote. Gurf Morlix joins Russell deCarle and Keith Glass at Hugh's Room tonight (Thursday, September 9).
