Album reviews Music

Hangar 18

Rating: NNN

You gotta hand it (your money) to the people at Def Jux. They’re running one of the sickest and most innovative indie rap labels and have just dropped this cleverly titled record, which speaks to hiphop, post-punk and electro heads at once. MCs Alaska and Windnbreeze have got the liquid wordplay-oriented flows, the cuts and scratches are furious (especially on Ichterlude), and producer paWL’s beats are generally strident El-P-style fuck-everything echoing synth lines over hard-ass drum machine kicks and snares. It’s relentless, and while the album is optimal quality, it’s one of those hard-to-listen-to-all-in-one-go type deals because it’s so saturated with all the aforementioned attributes.
