HANK WILLIAMS III Lovesick, Broke & Driftin' (Curb) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
The full-on Hank Williams Sr. revision heard on Lovesick, Broke & Driftin' is likely exactly what Curb was praying to get from Hank's grandson when they signed Hank III. While few can mimic that familiar cracking warble better than Hank III, and the throwback arrangements rely heavily on fiddle and pedal steel (expertly twanged by long-time Hank Snow sideman Kayton Roberts), you can tell tattooed Misfits fan Hank III's heart really isn't in it. You'll notice the difference in energy levels as soon as he tears into his delightful Music City dis, Trashville, which is the album's standout track. Nostalgia buffs and psychic mediums alike should find the Hank Sr. redux intriguing.
