Maybe I’m missing something here. I know the central joke of Har Mar Superstar, aka Sean Tillman, is the notion of a portly, balding dude who looks like Ron Jeremy prancing around like a pimpin’ sex symbol while crooning sweet sweet soul songs about how ladies wanna get with him. Thing is, Ron Jeremy is a sex symbol, and while Har Mar’s self-deprecating ditties about drunken dialing and wet panties can be amusing, listening to him warble lasciviously over glorified karaoke versions of the Jackson 5, Barry White, Missy Elliott and NKOTB tracks gets tired really fast. The presence of tough chicks like Karen O and Northern State tempers his parodic misogyny, but ultimately there’s not a lot of difference between The Handler and a Weird Al Yankovic album.
