HARPOON MISSILE

HARPOON MISSILE Boy, Interrupted (Linus) Rating: NN Rating: NN

The energy Brampton ruffnecks Harpoon Missile pack into their rock-inspired hiphop is impressive, but it takes more than shouting over horror beats to make a compelling record. Like Onyx and DMX, MC Harpoon’s tactic of growling menacingly on Boy, Interrupted is thrilling at first but quickly loses its impact. More troubling is the lack of discernable vision here. Writing a song about the struggles of a deadbeat dad, particularly in hiphop, is original and interesting. Rhyming about gunning down gay men and acting out cartoonishly violent pipe dreams is not. Harpoon Missile play Lee’s Palace tonight (Thursday, February 28).
