hawksley workman Almost A Full Moon (Universal) Rating: NNNN
Banging away at his piano and whistling cheerily, Hawksley Workman might lead you to think that his Almost A Full Moon mini-album (out Tuesday) isn't a Christmas record. There are no cheesy Rudolph jams or cabaret versions of Silver Bells. In fact, aside from the sleigh-bell jingle and occasional Christmas talk, Almost A Full Moon is a typical Hawksley Workman disc, with songs about staying indoors and learning how to knit. Recording the whole affair by himself over two days in Paris, Workman captures the cozy feel of the holidays on eight original tunes without limiting himself to one mood or style. A Christmas record you won't feel embarrassed about giving to someone as a gift.
