The superstar budget, celebrity producers and outrageous expectations that sabotaged Hayden's 1998 The Closer I Get disc are nowhere to be found on Skyscraper National Park. Wisely, the Toronto songwriter keeps things simple on this comeback disc. While it's some of the most upbeat material he's put to tape, the 11 songs here are all relatively minimal but surprisingly potent affairs, with only the barest swaths of piano, steel guitar and percussion filling out Hayden's acoustic strumming. The notable exception is Tea Pad, a swirling psychedelic instrumental interlude that is entirely out of character and should go on well beyond its two-minute limit. Hayden plays the Rivoli October 17 and 18.
