Headless Heroes

The Silence Of Love (Names)

Rating: NNNN

Joanna Newsom’s Nevada City pal Alela Diane seems determined to shed the singer/songwriter tag with Headless Heroes. On The Silence Of Love, she ditches her acoustic guitar and shows what she can do as an interpretive stylist.

Avoiding the obvious cover choices, the Headless Heroes provide Alela Diane with material in which she seems to find personal resonance. Consequently, she sings the hell out of Juicy Lucy’s Just One Time, I Am Kloot’s To You, Jackson C. Frank’s Blues Run The Game and Daniel Johnston’s beautifully poignant True Love Will Find You In The End.

Of course, having the support of a stellar group of Los Angeles hipster session aces – the dudes who get the call when Beck or Perry Farrell books studio time – doesn’t hurt. Watch for Alela Diane’s own album, To Be Still, due from Rough Trade in February.
