You know house music is in a bad way when its most creative producers are making funk, disco and hiphop records. Toronto DJ/producer Nick Holder chooses the latter, and his Headnodz collaborative project -- with vocal contributions from King Reign, Mathematik, Citizen Kane, Dub Ill, Peep Show, Zaki and Sicksense -- demonstrates his ability to apply his production prowess to a straight-up hiphop concept and make it work. Admittedly, the beats won't bounce your Hummer, and a couple of real dance-floor-rockin' party jams wouldn't have hurt, but considering that Trafficking is Holder's first foray into hiphop, it's a very promising debut. The two standout tracks with Zaki, Grow and Lies, suggest that a full Zaki album might be in order.
Celebrate the release of Headnodz with Nick Holder and company at Revival tonight (Thursday, April 13).
