HEATHER HEADLEY

Rating: NNN

Way to go, Heather Headley, for ripping off Pharrell’s album title – you know, In My Mind, the album he’s been talking about for months that had its release delayed in December. I guess when Billboard calls you “one of the greatest entertainers of the day” and your first album scores you a Grammy nod, you can mess up a Neptune’s career. But was it worth it? No doubt Headley’s voice is a strong, lithe, versatile, elastic instrument and her six-figure riddims are on point (thanks to Janet Jackson twiddlers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and check Lil Jon’s Motown-style turn), but some of these lyrics are numbing clich&eacutes (“Your love is like rain… would you climb the highest mountain… for me?”). Points for the Vybz Kartel cameo – but who invited Shaggy?
