Heidi Happy

Rating: NNNNN

On her fantastic second album, Switzerland’s Heidi Happy (aka Priska Zemp) tells stories about troubled relationships, ones that push and pull her in endless directions, try her patience and leave her confused and angry. Her lyrics are clear and genuine, like an overheard conversation with a best girlfriend over the phone.

But don’t for a moment think this is a meek woe-is-me effort. Zemp’s muscular melodies infuse the songs with life, her voice is smooth, with jazzy inflections, and she consistently pulls off daring arrangements – kettle drums, violins, tuba, flutes, double bass, handclaps, Rhodes – over the 18 tracks. Wholly original.

Top track: Take Four

Heidi Happy plays CMF Saturday (March 14) at Supermarket.
