Staunton R. Livingston was a beatnik Canadian folklorist who convinced a few CFLers to put down the pigskin and pick up a guitar. Academic musician Henry Adam Svec recently unearthed and recreated the resulting project, which is still shrouded in mystery.

We know that the originals were cut at some point in the 70s (then stored in the National Archives), but because Livingston was a Marxist who didn’t believe in “conventional notions of authorship,” we’ll never know who wrote Song Written Upon Getting Cut By The Argos or the lyrically impressive Life Is Like Canadian Football. As for the vocally limited Svec, his musicianship (piano, guitar and drums) just barely carries this project into the end zone.

The CFL Sessions are recreated live at the Tranzac Sunday (August 9).
