As the folks in the New Deal will attest, the line between knocking out a heavy groove and becoming a jam band is disturbingly fine. Chicago beat crew HIM have always danced around that division, creating Afrobeat, dub and post-rock around Doug Scharin's churning percussion tracks and occasionally descending into freewheeling jams, but never really taking it too far. New Features adds Bitches Brew-style fusion to the mix and also sacrifices some of the relentless grooves of the past for solider structure. Songs are still percussion-based and can stretch on indefinitely, but there's also a sinister sense of aggression in the mix that does away with any lurking hippy overtones. HIM play with Randy Weston's bassist, Alex Blake, at Lee's Palace Sunday (July 29).
