HOPE SANDOVAL & THE WARM INVENTIONS Bavarian Fruit Bread (EMI) Rating: NNN
Hope Sandoval's frail wisp of a voice can make Margo Timmins sound like an elephant. After making some of the quietest records in history with Mazzy Star, the whispering crooner has paired herself up with long-lost My Bloody Valentine drummer Colm O'Ciosoig for this ghostly solo disc. Sounding more like a Mazzy Star demo than Sandoval might want to admit, Bavarian Fruit Bread features pretty folk ballads built around carefully strummed guitar, backup vocals that sound like snores and some carefully plinked xylophone. Atmosphere is everything, nothing moves quickly and when the band does kick in, it sounds as though they're playing in another town rather than the next room.
