Hot Toddy play Hugh's Room Tuesday (October 4) . Rating: NNN
New Brunswick's Hot Toddy won me over with 2003's The Salty Sessions, an upbeat set of original roots tunes bristling with energy and passion that still finds its way into my CD player. Live At The Black Box is a more laid-back affair, with new additions Tim Isaac on cello and Jim Blewett on rhythm guitar giving the songs a bluesier feel. This isn't a bad thing; their contributions provide a nice bit of dramatic tension that wasn't even hinted at on the earlier disc. Recorded live with an audience, and pre-show without, the sound is spot-on and perfectly captures the immediacy and subtleties of a concert, making the understated, meditative polyrhythms of Everything She Got as powerful in your living room as they were at the Black Box.
