HOT TODDY The Salty Sessions Vol. 1 ( NB Sound Initiative ) Rating: NNNNN
This New Brunswick trio eases through each number with a rightness that reeks of sincerity and dedication to the muse. Thom Swift's acoustic guitar and dobro work are as heartfelt as any string plucker's, complemented perfectly by Joel LeBlanc's electric guitar and Tom Easley's toe-tingling double bass. Don't get me started on the harmonies. Swift's gruff vocal delivery sounds like a bottle of Scotch and a pack of smokes, lending a convincing, world-weary air to the great stories he tells, like Ry Cooder at his best and Randy Newman before he was worthy of a Mad TV parody. Hot Toddy show that Canadian roots run very deep.
