Hush Hush

Hush Hush Fake (Popguru) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

This is a very girly record. Lead lungs Keri Steele has one of those absolutely lovely little lilting voices that sits ever so prettily atop lush, tasteful arrangements of guitar, bass, drums and cello with just enough fuzz thrown in to provide the post-grunge indie cred element. Très elegant, with haunting tones and some finely crafted, at times trip-hoppy arrangements. However, Fake falls heavily on the serious side and is limited tempo-wise, plodding along at a mellow pace that ultimately becomes stodgy. These chicks could stand to let loose and lighten up a little – but still, a charming collection of pretty tunes.

Hush Hush play the El Mocambo tonight (Thursday, January 15).
