ILL EASE The Exorcist (Too Pure) Rating: NNNN
Ill Ease, the one-woman band of Elizabeth Sharp, is one of those love-it-or-hate-it projects. Her voice is "different" - slurred, lazy, a bit off-key and a bit whiny. Her guitar playing is rudimentary but charming. The rhythms are quirky and backwards in a Can kind of way. Her songs seem half-finished, both in production style and songwriting, and are invariably dark and full of black humour. Having said all that, I can't stop listening to it - the intimate sloppiness and attitude are addictive. Kind of like a more New York female version of Beck, but with a bigger appetite for partying.
