Ivana Santilli

Rating: NN

Boasting production credits that include King Britt, Dwele, James Poyser and 4 Hero’s Dego MacFarlane among others, Corduroy Boogie sounds like it should be a breakthrough for Canuck club indie diva Ivana Santilli – at least on paper. In reality, the heavily programmed tracks that come rife with cheesy synth sweetening – at a time when most of her contemporaries are moving toward an earthier vibe – leaves her jazzy soul confections sounding horribly dated. Perhaps dusting off the Oberheim and vocoder in order to pursue a blurping late-80s aesthetic was all part of the strategy for securing urban radio play on this side of the border, with the knowledge that many Canadian stations still choose to follow trends, not set them. Ivana Santilli plays the Mod Club August 26 and spins August 27.
