J Xaverre These Acid Stars (Memphis Industries) Rating: NNNN

Rating: NNNN

Britain’s one-man Flaming Lips, J Xaverre, aka Kenickie drummer Johnny X, proves by upping the ante with grander aspirations for These Acid Stars that his first two fab bedroom-based experiments in pop symphonics had nothing to do with beginner’s luck. The touchstones here appear to be Beach Boys and Millennium-style orch-pop reminiscent of the work Liam Hayes has done under the Plush alias, though not quite as insanely extravagant. It still comes off like one nutter turned loose in a recording studio, but this fool definitely knows how to put a pop song together.
