Jamie Lidell

Rating: NNN

Perhaps discovering that there ain’t as much booty in glitch techno as he expected, Jamie Lidell has put aside his laptop in an attempt to reinvent himself as a sensitive soul crooner. It’s an ambitious move for Cristian Vogel’s Super_Collider cohort, whose job-related experience – other than playing a squirrel in a school play – amounts to guest vocals on a Matthew Herbert track. Still, Multiply doesn’t come off like a misguided vanity project. Lidell’s clearly heard a couple Marvin Gaye and Prince albums and can convincingly put across a tune, but he could really use a hand from someone familiar with R&B songwriting, arranging and production techniques if he intends to be taken seriously by anyone other than Prefuse 73 and Boards of Canada fans.
