Jan Jelinek avec the exposures La Nouvelle Pauvreté (~scape) Rating: NNNN Rating: NNNN
Jan Jelinek has a different take on sampler jazz than the computer-based easy listening fusion we often get. He uses micro-sampling and digi-dub techniques on vintage jazz samples, stealing the in-between moments rather than the themes. It's atmospheric but not so avant that it no longer sounds like music. You could call it techno-lounge, but without the embarrassing unintended kitsch that term usually implies. This is much smarter and more emotional than all that café-friendly, mellow electro-jazz that has continued to flow in the years since triphop.
