Alma De Santiago (EMI) Rating: NNNNAnother genius move for Toronto jazz flautist Jane Bunnett, as our gal in Havana heads to rural Santiago, the spiritual home of Cuban son and the Casa de la Trova. But don't count on hearing any laid-back strumming on Alma De Santiago. Bunnett has connected with Los Jubilados, the Santiago Jazz Saxophon Quartet and the earth-moving Los Hoyos for an all-out blowing session. Never coming off like a cultural tourist, Bunnett's fiery flute and stylish soprano-sax sizzle blend beautifully throughout. The highlight is Bunnett and Los Hoyos, which suddenly erupts in a pounding drum 'n' chant frenzy that's positively trance-inducing. Jane Bunnett and her Spirits of Havana combo play Harbourfront Centre's Norigen Stage Saturday (June 23) at 8 pm.
