A sense of melancholy and dark intensity pervades the bulk of this Calgary-based quartet’s debut album. Chiefly carried by the rich, weighty vocals of singer Jamie Fooks, doing her best homage to Cat Power, Love thoughtfully combines folky pop-noir with glitchy, programmed beats and brooding dramatic intensity.
The songs are often gorgeous and plaintive, like the plucky waltz Oh Captain, and have rich violin, accordion and piano arrangements. At 10 songs, Love isn’t tediously over-thought or drawn out. Instead, it’s an excellent debut that signals the arrival of a talented group.
Jane Vain & the Dark Matter play tonight (Thursday, March 6) at the Silver Dollar as part of CMW.
