JAPANCAKES

JAPANCAKES The Sleepy Strange (Kindercore) Rating: NN

One step ahead of the Nashville think tank, Athens’s Japancakes lead the way to a soft country-New Age crossover with The Sleepy Strange that makes the easy-listening twaddle of Floyd Cramer sound positively confrontational.

The Sleepy Strange, with the emphasis on “sleepy,” shows the Japancakes ensemble adding a tiny bit more instrumental colour to their typically monochromatic musical palette. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to shake their snooze-inducing reliance on repetition. Some say dreamy, I say zzzzzzzzzzzz.
