Stripping his hard knock ghetto anthems down to their non-existent acoustic origins is a peculiar idea for a club star like Jay-Z. What makes this Unplugged session hold together are the rhymes themselves as well as Jay’s inspired choice of backing band. Philly busters the Roots provide the organic soul Jay-Z needs outside of glossy production. Sadly, the group is limited to playing live versions of Jay-Z’s beats and samples. With no room for improvisation or even a detour away from the obvious, it seems like a pointless exercise rather than the radical reinterpretation that could have gone down.MG
