Jazz BiznIZ 3 (Counterpoint) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN
Until recently, the UK Counterpoint label's Jazz Bizniz series has been an impeccably compiled source of lost indie dance jazz soul and Latin joints. But the departure of tastemaking DJ Russ Dewbury seems to have left a serious gap in the quality control department. The few choice cuts on the third volume -- chiefly Marva Broome's fiercely funky Art Ensemble-backed Mystifying Mama, Le Ry-Co Jazz's Pi-Pi-Poh and Frank Walton's Safari -- are surrounded by tepid fusion and shlocky R&B twaddle from the late 70s and early 80s. Ughh. Local spoken-word artist Dwayne Morgan, who contributes the poetry-house jam Evolution, appears as part of the Idiom party at Lula Lounge tonight (Thursday, February 27).
