The Jazzlab project is Alain Bédard's (bassist and co-founder of Quebec's Effendi Records) "experiment" throwing together eight jazz composers signed or associated with his label and getting them to play each other's compositions. It's an astute marketing move, since the final product feels more attributable to the label's sound than to the individual players. The majority of tracks really flow. Alto saxophonist Remi Bolduc's opener, Song For Joe, for example, swings nicely to an uptempo beat, and pianist John Roney's Rate Of Change stands out with a soft melody line that guides the group. A stellar slice of contemporary Montreal jazz.
