Ambitiously stepping sideways out of the Barmitzvah Brothers, Jenny Mitchell has started a creative solo project. With an Omnichord and the musical support of her friends, she captures a small-town Ontario feel in her quirky songwriting.
Mitchell interweaves innocent melancholia with third-person stories about blundering crushes and social misfits. It’s unclear where fantasy begins and ends, which gives the record a light and playful quality but also detracts from her more serious songs. However, imagination may be Michell’s greatest strength, and when she pushes herself to sing beyond her comfort range, as on Lottery, the effect is quite beautiful.
