JERSEY

JERSEY Generation Genocide (Virgin) Rating: NNN

Rating: NNN

When you’re from Burlington your life centres around BMX bikes, playing hockey, working at golf courses and steel mills and mastering video games. It beats homework any time, and it’s what the four members of Jersey think of as street cred. I guess it works, because they have Virgin Records believing they’re the great white hope. Raised on vintage Clash and Bad Religion, with a liking for bands like Rancid, lead singer Greg Taylor belts out song after song convincingly, while guitarist Sean McNab keeps things interesting and catchy, realizing three chords don’t have to be played the same way every tune. The band uses infectious harmonies on almost every song, and while The Story Of ’53 may be a little too close for comfort to the Clash’s Death Or Glory, it isn’t insulting to any Joe Strummer and Mick Jones fan. The title track is a definite unit shifter.
