Jeru The damaja

Jeru The damaja Divine Design (Ashenafi) Rating: NN

Rating: NN

The Prophet returns on this slightly corny record. It would probably be far better if Jeru were still working with DJ Premier and Gangstarr, but without them he comes off as preachy, hypocritical and out of the loop. He does deserve credit for attempts to change up his flow and to update the Hustlers Convention sound on the slightly off Zilch The Pimp – but that barely worked when Melle Mel remade it in the 80s. The beats are weak, the preaching’s annoying and Jeru sounds slightly defeated at times. Not awful, but the fall-off continues.
