Jesse Zubot

Jesse Zubot is a talented musician. But when he set aside his successful rootsy jam band, Zubot & Dawson, and plummeted into two odd side projects, he should’ve kept it to himself. No one needs to hear the inner workings of Zubot’s identity crisis. While LaConnor’s strings-and-percussion soundscapes are occasionally whimsical, Zubotta’s aggressive electronica just sounds dated. You feel like Zubot locked himself in a room for days and only listened to mid-90s Warp bands like Squarepusher, cuz Zubotta comes across more like a lousy tribute to them than an original work. The instrumental ramblings on both albums lack structure, genre or purpose, and even LaConnor’s touches of free jazz end up sounding like the soundtrack to Fantasia.

Zubot joins the Jim Byrnes Acoustic Band at Hugh’s Room Wednesday (April 13).
