JIMMY CLIFF

JIMMY CLIFF We Are All One: The Best Of (Columbia) Rating: NN Rating: NN

Cut off at the pass by Bob Marley in his attempt to become reggae’s first global star, Jimmy Cliff has still had a remarkable career as a singer and songwriter, bringing the music to a much wider audience with a handful of rootsy classics. Sadly, very few of these legendary tracks have made it onto We Are All One. Obvious cuts like You Can Get It If You Really Want, Wonderful World, Beautiful People and Sitting In Limbo appear, but the focus here is on Cliff’s shoddy mid-80s material. The cheesy synths and electronic drums aside, Cliff’s later work simply hasn’t aged well, and many of the choices here inexplicably seem to have been made for licensing ease rather than genuine quality. Grab yourself a copy of the soundtrack from The Harder They Come instead.
