This live recording of John Mayer playing in L.A. is split into three parts: an acoustic set, a set with his trio, and a full band performance. He (and his band) are tight, well-trained musicians, but they don’t put their skills to work in very interesting ways. If you like the kind of stiff blues rock that you tend to hear in the background of beer commercials this might thrill you, but otherwise it’s a bit of a snooze-fest.
Think Stevie Ray Vaughan stripped of any kind of edge or passion, or Jimi Hendrix without the wild sonic explorations and hungry creative spark. The sensitive-guy ballads fare better, but this double-disc set won’t attract any new fans.
John Mayer hits Molson Amphitheatre Monday (July 7).
