I don’t usually go for jazz cover albums. Does the world really need another version of Come Fly With Me? Nor am I a fan of American Idol. So you could knock me over with a feather over the fact that I’ve anything positive to say about this album. John Stevens, American Idol finalist, sounds strikingly like Frank Sinatra (and looks like a precious ponce, which is not necessarily negative in crooner land). His voice is rich, well-controlled and free from that ubiquitous slide jazz wannabes try to pass off as stylish when they can’t hit a note head-on. He sounds more mature than his years. It would be nice, of course, if he moved away from overdone standards (It Had To Be You, Someone To Watch Over Me) and tried something original.
