More than a tale of two cities, Rio Bahia reunites the exceptionally gifted Brazilian singer/songwriter and guitarist Joyce with legendary Jobim arranger and guitarist Dori Caymmi (who did the string charts for her self-titled debut in 68) for an entrancing celebration of the rich musical history connected with both Rio and Bahia. With Caymmi on hand, the arrangements and acoustics for the breezy small-combo session are exquisitely understated to better show off Joyce’s vivacious voice, while Caymmi’s lively fretwork adds tasteful counterpoint. Everything seems to fall into place perfectly, with not a single wasted note. A marvel from start to finish.
