Julie Doiron

Rating: NNN

Canuck indie rock poster girl and former Eric’s Trip babe Doiron returns with a beautifully broken set of bare-bones guitar songs. Recorded off the floor in a handful of makeshift studios – including Eric’s Trip bandmate Rick White’s apartment – Goodnight Nobody is ragged and raw, with chairs creaking on hardwood floors and breathing in the background of Doiron’s melancholy vocal lines. There’s a haunted gothic vibe to the Dave Draves-produced tracks that’s similar to Cat Power’s You Are Free, while Parisian producer Etienne Jaumet nails a lo-fi feel that harks back to unfettered basement recordings like Sebadoh’s Bakesale. Doiron’s lyrics can be grim – she whispers apologies and pines for long-distance lovers like she’s holding back tears – but they’re suited to the intimacy of the disc.
