KANE WELCH KAPLIN

Rating: NNNN

Kevin Welch has been around, to say the least. The Nashville-based guitar slinger’s been playing music since he was 17 in 1979, writing songs for the likes of Waylon Jennings, Trisha Yearwood, the Highwaymen and more.

But while writing for the big names brought in the big bucks, it’s his own material that’s really worth paying attention to. Along with Fats Kaplin and Keiran and Lucas Kane, Welch formed Kane Welch Kaplin three years ago, and they’ve received plenty of critical acclaim since.

The group’s third disc is a haunting, minimalist roots record that’s full of passion and heartfelt emotion. Last Lost Highway is a stunningly sensitive number about losing a loved one, while opener Ain’t Gonna Do It, sung by Keiran Kane, would sound perfect in an old western.

Kane Welch Kaplin play Hugh’s Room Tuesday (September 25).
