KARINA ZORN

Rating: NN

Like a dollar-store mood ring, soft jazz has a tendency to match your mood in a cheap and vague way. If you’re feeling introspective and kind of hazy, the sparse rhythms and clear vocals can wash over you and carry you aimlessly along without making your heart race or your palms sweat.

Karina Zorn’s new disc, Through These Eyes, is a collection of classic ballads like The Very Thought Of You and The Days Of Wine And Roses that drawl through maudlin piano interludes and faint percussive hits to take you nowhere you haven’t been before. Zorn’s interpretations of those familiar tunes will make waiting in line more tolerable, if only because they provide momentary distraction to teeth-grinding frustration.
