Kate Rusby

Rating: NNN

Someone at BBC2 has boldly named Brit folk babe Kate Rusby one of the top 10 folk voices of the century, although she probably wouldn’t even crack the top 100 of West Virginia in 1948. Still, there’s a certain sweetness to her coy chirp that has undeniable appeal. Rusby’s 10 gathers together overlooked faves from the past with recent updates and remastered versions of songs for what many are betting will be her North American breakthrough. It might seem like Rusby’s understated treatments on 10 are a bit too airy-fairy to cause a furor, but the same was said of Enya and the queen of Quinlan Road, Loreena McKennitt. And judging by the sleeve photos, Rusby has the edge on both in the camisole competition.
