Thanks to Norah Jones and Diana Krall, every country's got to have its own adult contemporary female jazz singer. Both the UK and former Russian republic Georgia can lay claim to 22-year-old Katie Melua, a charming and talented vocalist who's sold over 5 million albums since 2003. Piece By Piece, her sophomore effort, follows the same pattern as her popular debut: lots of smoky jazz numbers and a few upbeat blues tracks. Although fans of Jones and Krall will enjoy this album, the disc is not nearly as developed as Jones's Come Away With Me. Nine Million Bicycles is unbearably cheesy, and Melua's misguided cover of Canned Heat's On The Road Again shows she's still got a long way to go before she'll truly make her mark. Katie Melua plays the Mod Club tonight (Thursday, July 6).
