There’s something about this that reminds me of that neat push and pull between dissonance and classical beauty that Björk does with her voice, and the largely electronic backdrop helps the comparison. There’s also a bit of Kate Bush in here, and maybe even a bit of Nico – hell, why not throw in some PJ Harvey, too?
Those singers don’t have much in common, but like them, Stelmanis has her own take on that otherworldly wailing and whispering that can raise the hairs on the back of your neck. A few lighter moments might make this a more listenable album, but if you can deal with a degree of intensity and experimental weirdness, you won’t miss the sunshine.
