KEITH AND RENEE

Rating: NN

The soft pop duo Easily Amused are inexplicably one of Winnipeg’s most successful acts. They’ve played with Sean Lennon and the Guess Who, and one member was even on Canadian Idol. Their latest, the first under their own names, Keith and Renee, is a sappy collection of television-soundtrack-approved tunes.

It starts off well enough. In fast-paced rock opener Revolution, they sound a bit like a radio-friendly Mates of State, but things quickly devolve. Feel The Stars is frustratingly cheesy, and positive messages like “I can feel the stars in each and every one of us” in this and other songs will get your eyes rolling.

You can’t deny the duo’s great harmonies, but their music is more suited to after-school specials than home stereo play.

Keith and Renee play the Rivoli (Wednesday) February 27.
