KELLEY POLAR

Rating: NNNN

Though it’s musical and easy to listen to, this album is guaranteed to provoke some unusually polarized (no pun intended) reactions. Kelley Polar has an intense earnestness and fascination with cosmic themes that could rub some listeners the wrong way, and a defiantly quirky aesthetic that may leave some scratching their heads.

The obvious comparison is to the avant disco of Arthur Russell. Polar is more enamoured with synths but both are classically trained string players whose minds were blown by dance music and who proceeded to blow the minds of dance music fans by reinterpreting the clichés of the genre from an outsider’s perspective.
