Kenna New Sacred Cow (Columbia/Sony) Rating: NNN Rating: NNN

Hey, remember the 80s? Kenna does. This Virginia-area songwriter has teamed up with high school chum Chad “I’m Not Pharrell” Hugo of the Neptunes and released New Sacred Cow, an album awash in the blandishments of vintage Depeche Mode, Soft Cell and Joshua Tree-era U2. Although the danceable beats of the ever-present Hugo (he co-wrote 11 of the album’s tunes) work well, there’s little chance Kenna will be getting heavy rotation on 106 And Park. New Sacred Cow, a sometimes engaging mixing of genres, is really just a carefully contrived exercise in emulative songwriting.
