Keshia Chante

Rating: NN

Listening to this record makes me feel like a 14-year-old girl, but it’s actually designed to make 14-year-olds feel like 25-year-old women. On her eponymous debut, Ottawa native and adolescent R&B newbie Chant&eacute wallows in two basic categories – I Love You, Can I Trust You? and I’m Not Ready To Have Sex With You. There are some recycled beats here that her fans are too young to remember, but they were beaten into submission a few years ago by Tupac, Blackstreet and Mariah Carey. The sample Mariah used, Mobb Deep’s Shook Ones, Part II, serves as the bed for Keshia’s reply to Shawn “T-Dot” Desman’s Shook, called Shook “The Answer.” Turns out Desman co-penned seven tracks on this slick little product for young girls.
