KILL THE LIGHTS

Rating: NNNN

From the jumpy opening track, Skinny White Girls, it’s pretty clear that Toronto’s Kill the Lights are gonna be a band to watch in 06. Taking a cue from the melodic wall-of-sound tendencies of My Bloody Valentine and the jittery energy of Talking Heads, Winter Asthmatics is a lovely and layered album full of warbling but affecting melodies and plenty of that indie-rock disco stuff that the kids are going crazy for these days. Singer/guitarist Alex Hackett makes a whole lot of beautiful noise on his axe, while the rhythm section keeps up with sweaty energy and creative playing.

Kill the Lights play the El Mocambo tonight (Thursday, December 8).
