KIM BEGGS

Rating: NNN

Stripped-down production and simple melodies work wonders here, letting Kim Beggs’s great lyrics tell their stories without interruption. Not that people from the Yukon are known for glitz. Oh, right, they are – but not that kinda glitz. Spare acoustic strumming by Beggs, subtle stand-up bass by Bob Hamilton, heart-wrenching pedal steel courtesy of Gene Brown, and harmonies from Anne Louise Genest make for a natural homegrown sound that stimulate the senses of the soul. Comparisons to Lucinda Williams will be hard to avoid, yet her voice is closer to Kim Deal doing Drivin’ On 9 than to anything by Williams. Kim Beggs plays Hugh’s Room Tuesday (May 18).
