Isn't it odd that even after King Khan & the Shrines steamrolled their way through a stellar series of standing-room-only shows during NXNE 2006, their discs are still only available in Canada as German imports?
Well, at least Hazelwood Vinyl Plastics recognizes the value of raw Canuck talent, especially when it comes backed by a blaring horn section.
For their third album proper, Montreal's King Khan and his boogaloo badasses expand on the short 'n' sloppy garage rock routine by bringing more of their sleazy soul revue into the studio. That means What Is?! is packed with longer jams and a broader stylistic range of ass-shaking antics, so the raunchy freakbeat foolery is broken up with boisterous blasts of yé-yé, some Eastern-tinged psych-pop and even a detour into a Sun Ra-inspired cosmic jazz exploration for a shouting, shaking and shimmying good time.
Watch for King Khan and his sidekick BBQ harmonizing doo-wop-style in the Khan-scored Oliver Rihs feature flick Schwarze Schafe (aka Black Sheep). Coming to a theatre near you - provided you live in Hamburg, Munich, Potsdam or Berlin. www.hazelwood.de.
